I was standing in a Chinese restaurant, waiting for my take-out orange chicken, when I looked up and saw the television. It was CNN and it was a shot of the rally in Butler, PA yesterday, right about the time it happened.
Of course – despite seeing Donald Trump with blood trickling down his face – it took quite some time for CNN to admit that shots had been fired. On the website, CNN went with “Trump falls at rally…”
It took about an hour or so for CNN to move beyond “speech interrupted by Secret Service” to “assassination attempt” and I do understand – a tiny bit – the unknowing caution shown by the media.
But only a tiny bit – it was clear to anyone watching what had just happened and the proliferation of terms like “loud noises” and “escorted away” was bad reporting to the point that it did look like the media trying to downplay the fact that Trump just got shot.
The how and why is still yet to be figured out, though theories are flying every which way, with some on the left embracing the idea that Trump “staged” it to garner sympathy. On the other side, there is the idea that the deep state wanted to make sure Trump was not nominated at the Republican convention later this week and could therefore be replaced with Nikki Haley, a much friendlier face for them.
The first concept is stupid, the second is at least terrifyingly plausible. That is the point the nation has come to: the government killing a president it does not want back is not inconceivable.
And – in a hopefully awful incident of irony – House Democrats in April had introduced a bill to take away Trump’s Secret Service protection entirely in the wake of his “conviction” on, um, well I have figures it out but it involved paying a one-night-stand money.
The bill’s name? DISGRACED, which stands for “Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable.” Pretty sure we won’t be seeing that move forward now.
By the way: both sides have to stop the “clever” acronym bill titles now.
The shooter was killed and so far little is known about the 20-year-old Thomas Crooks. The names of the three attendees who were shot – one fatally – have not been released yet. It would behoove Trump to personally pay all of their expenses.
And one can only suspect the incipient existence of memes mocking Trump for ducking when shots rang out.
Grrrrrr.
But on a lighter note (need one to end this today) while I have never been president I’m pretty sure that’s what you are told to do during your first “welcome to the White House” orientation.
“Congrats – now, the bathroom’s down that hall, no loud parties after eleven at night, the security deposit is $438,000 but you don’t pay rent so that’s a plus, and, oh, after that whole Commander Biden fiasco, no pets over 15 pounds. Garbage is on Wednesdays, here’s your key – it’s twenty bucks if you lose it – and, um, oh almost forgot: if someone takes a shot at you, hit the deck.”
Thanks for subscribing!
It’s being reported that the shooter’s a registered Republican, but I wouldn’t read much into it since it’s common for people to change their registrations in closed primary states like PA.
The Dems truely are a loathesome bunch.
