So, the guy in charge of Ukraine went to Washington last week and it didn’t turn out quite as planned…or did it?
The globalist left is saying that Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy was set up by the Vladimir Putin-loving Trump administration (imagine if Putin’s first name was Nicholas? Would he sound so threatening?) to humiliate Zelenskyy.
Trump supporters are saying it was a set-up job, except – in theory – it was arranged by Neo-Obamacons to make Trump look foolish.
We’ve all seen the footage, particularly of the end of the Oval Office meeting – no one comes off terribly well.
But to say Zelensky “won” the argument is absurd; actually, beyond absurd.
He may try to dress like Elon Musk, but Zelenskyy simply does not have the cred – the cards, as Trump put it - to back it up.
Stepping back a bit, it is true the US – as the Cold War wound down - convinced Ukraine to give up its nuclear missiles (lots and lots of them had been placed there by the USSR) for a bag of cash and an agreement that Russia would not invade, etc.
This was a mistake – trusting Russia to end its centuries-long effort to create/expand its empire (tsars, commies, whatever) is like trusting an ex not to tell her girlfriends about that one weird thing you did every night.
Of course, Russia sees Ukraine like the US sees Cuba – too close, too much of a threat, too much of an opportunity for oppositional mischief.
Hence, Ukraine having become Russia’s Bay of Pigs and Vietnam at the same time.
Simple fact – the war was essentially unprovoked, Putin thought he could move in, grab some land and be done with it, and all would be over rather quickly.
That did not happen, in large part because of Zelenskyy himself and the Ukrainian remembrance of the very very nasty things Russians have done to them over the past 80 years, like The Holodomor, during which the Soviets stole all the food and Ukrainians ended up eating everything, including themselves.
But having become a cause célèbres throughout the world of proper people, Zelenskyy thought he could leverage that to push the new administration into writing yet another blank check.
That’s why he was so pissed during the Oval Office meeting – Trump said no – unless certain points were met - and it went on downward from there.
It reminded one of a trust fund kid being told that he either gets his act together or the monthly checks stop – Zelenskyy got pissed and bitter and childish and defensive.
If you think Putin is Hitler, imagine the president of Poland in 1939 sitting down with Roosevelt and acting that way in public?
(Note – a number of commentators have noted that this is just not how diplomacy is done, it’s done in back rooms and in secret and that’s, um, better...? Actually, it was good to see for all of us regular humans.)
The term used in the New York Post was “arrogant ingrate.” “Arrogant ingrate.”
And it seems Zelenskyy was pushed into destroying the possible peace framework (btw, not commenting on that specifically save to say Russia has to pay for its egregiousness) not by people who have his best interests at heart but those he wanted to give anti-Trumpists the talking point of “look at that embarrassment!!!” )
You are treated, Zelenskyy, by Europe as the Second Coming of Tito/Churchill not because they believe or trust you but that your people – not theirs – are fighting with and dying against Russia and if they keep you around you will be a slavish member of the EU club.
German doesn’t need the Wehrmacht to go East anymore…at least for now
Either way, whomever advised Zelenskyy forgot to mention that MSNBC, CNN, etc. are dying on the vine and that while his schtick may play well in the narrowing corridors of DC power it does not bode well for the long term.
That being said, I do actually support Ukraine territorial integrity and can offer nothing except praise for the how the people of that nation have defended themselves. Let’s hop some Obama-pols, desperate to re-assert their dominance over the Democratic Party, haven’t just de-railed what hope for peace there may be just so they could make a few theoretical fleeting globalist anti-Trump points.
On another topic, in 1996 the tv show “Third Rock From the Sun” did an episode about racial identity.
To summarize, the family of aliens had no idea what ethnic group they belonged to until they were told by their landlord that the last name, ‘Solomon,’ was Jewish, which was a name they picked after landing on Earth and they saw the word on a furniture store sign.
But prior to being told they were presumably Jewish, they tried to figure out what they and their people might be, hence the following (which will take the place of the epigram this week) clip:
What is the most astonishing thing about this clip is how much attitudes have changed, how the culture has devolved from acceptance into mean-girl cliqueishness.
Imagine saying on TV last year that race doesn’t matter…
