In Washington, a bunch of people were worried that Kevin McCarthy would be too much like the deep state’s Charlie McCarthy so they made him sweat out achieving his lifelong ambition to become Speaker of the House.
Good for them.
And I wouldn’t be saying that unless they “got” one crucial concession from McCarthy, a concession that not only should not had to have been a concession but a core plank of his platform in the first place – a new “Church” committee.
As a refresher, the 1975 Church committee – technically called the United States Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities (it also had a House counterpart) – investigated the intelligence community to figure out if it was being naughty. And it was.
