"It's a sad world, when a girl will break a boy, just because she can..."
The Forever Truth of "Criminal"
Fiona Apple is great.
Specifically, the incredibly knowing line written by a 19-year-old that “a girl will break a boy just because she can...” shows that.
Having been a teenage boy and now an actual man (the peanut gallery will stop giggling now, please,) the truth of the statement rings so intensely true.
At society’s essence, girls do run the world and everyone knows this.
No matter what – unless you are a psycho guy given to violence and evil – strong girls control the world.
Never forget that she (oddly, I think gender identities don’t quite matter here) can always say “No” when you pop the question. It’s the man’s job to ask - it is the girl’s job to say no and do better.
Even though Apple’s video is rather borderline and some of the specific images suggest a teen about to be taken advantage of, a closer look shows Apple’s “character” has more than an element of control.
The decisions may not be the best but they are hers.
All that being said, the point of this post is to ask everyone to compare Apple’s original version and Postmodern Jukebox’s torch song cover.
Here is Apple’s:
Here is Postmodern Jukeboxes:
This is an open comment piece – which version do you think is better?
BTW – did you enjoy this diversion? Let me know in the comments…
As an avid fan of Fiona Apple, there is no substitute for the original. Although, the Postmodern Jukebox did a solid second-place rendition.
