Last spring’s encampments and riots and fights and bunnings in favor of Hamas and against Israel were a terrifying example of campus leadership incompetence, media incontinence, student incoherence, and incomprehensible antisemitism.
The campus leadership dithered, Jewish students were physically barred from entering classrooms and libraries, violence erupted, student life shuddered to a halt.
Eventually, the main pro-Hamas encampment was cleared, kids went home for summer and for the most part forgot why they protested in the first place (Note – for guys at least, any kind of protest not always politically based –it’s just a way to meet girls.)
In other words, UCLA tolerated/encouraged/looked the other way/failed to protect its Jewish students for weeks on end.
And then there are the numerous lawsuits charging UCLA and other UC schools with intentionally and systematically exclude certain people from admission because of the color of their skin.
As to illegal alien students, though, UCLA has their backs.
The school and its new president, Dr. Julio Frenk, announced today that UCLA will not help federal immigration authorities. In a “Bruin community-wide email,” Frenk said:
In this climate, we want to reaffirm to our immigrant and international Bruins: You are not alone. You belong at UCLA. You are an essential part of our community, and we remain fully committed to supporting your ability to work, learn, teach and thrive here. We see you, we value you and we will continue to advocate for your rights and well-being.
Through our Undocumented Student Program (USP), Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars and other campus units, UCLA is working directly with the students, faculty and staff who may be impacted by federal policy changes. We also want to make the broader UCLA community aware of important resources and actions that the university is taking.
Unlike the equivocal – at best - stance it took towards its Jewish students, UCLA “stands alongside our colleagues throughout the UC system in our support of undocumented members of our community.”
To that end, UCLA has created a number of strictures and helpful hints for dealing with immigration authorities if they happen to be on campus.
First, no faculty, staffer, or student is expected to pro-actively assist federal immigration authorities.
Second, while most of the campus is public space that even dastardly ICE agents can enter, much – like dorms – are private so don’t let the agents if you do not see a warrant.
Third, today’s email also reminded students that campus police will not assist federal enforcement agents:
“In compliance with UC Office of the President, “UC Police will not undertake joint efforts with federal immigration enforcement authorities to investigate, detain or arrest individuals for violation of federal immigration law.”
Today’s email also includes a handy printable “know your rights” card which contains a script for anyone confronted by a federal agent to repeat:
“I am exercising my 5th Amendment right under the U.S. Constitution to remain
silent. I do not wish to speak with you, answer your questions, or sign or give you any documents without a lawyer present. I do not give you permission to enter my
home or search my person or belongings based on my 4th Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution, unless you have a warrant to enter, signed by a judge or magistrate with my name and correct address on it that you slide under the door.”
The door, not the fence…
Note – do click on Frenk’s email and read the additional material – it is a depressing hystericalness.
