This is excellent. I have long called for an independent bipartisan commission led by people not directly associated to our official COVID response at all levels (federal, state and local) to review what worked, what didn't, why and why not, and "lessons learned." I've even suggested the people who should lead it - former Senators Bill Frist (a medical professional) and Tom Daschle (a health policy pro). I would add these signatories to it. I find it odd that we get so many "post mortem" commissions (9/11, etc.) but for the largest pandemic in over 100 years, nada?

Answer to all questions: increase fear to the point of hysteria in order to control the population and to rake in gigantic profits for big pharma and other corporate entities at the expense of small businesses. .

3. Why were schools and universities closed despite early evidence about the enormous age-gradient in COVID-19 mortality, early data showing that schools were not major sources of spread, and early evidence that school closures would cause enormous collateral damage to the education and mental health of children and young adults?

Ooh ooh pick me! Pick me!

Answer: Because American academia is run by and for the benefit of a class of cowardly careerist conformists whose paramount concern in all situations is signalling their tribal loyalty and making sure that no matter what they maintain their status and cushy state-subsidized lifestyles.

Nothing matters to the leaders of these institutions except being seen as Serious People with all the Proper Beliefs aka whatever the NYT and NPR prescribe as Right Thought.

And, as the Covid zeitgeist for liberals demanded nonstop permanent PANIC! and since academia's ruling ethos seems to be SAFETY FIRST! (and last), their clients and cohort demanded the most extreme and nonsensical response, so this is what they provided.
