Whenever I think of the cult of safety, I am always reminded of your state’s Proposition 13, the Orwellian-named Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act. It deserves some credit, I suppose for helping clean up onerous chemicals in water, but it also created the sign-making industry, thus those ubiquitous warning signs everywhere from hotel meeting rooms to salad bar restaurants. It has also helped raise the price of food and beverages while simultaneously creating a cottage industry for legal bounty hunters.

too true - the sign industry led to the not having a sign lawsuit industry because anyone can sue anyone for non-compliance (for example, the health department doesn't have to find a violation first)- literally thousands of suits have been filed against small businesses for not having the sign or not having the sign visible enough or having the wrong sign, etc. - https://timesofsandiego.com/opinion/2023/01/04/frivolous-lawsuits-have-turned-california-into-a-judicial-hellhole/
